A writing-first product should not compete with the writing. Strong rhythm, thin borders, and consistent alignment create enough structure without adding visual noise.
A flat design system also scales well. The same primitives can present essays, project notes, search results, photo captions, and admin forms without a full redesign.
The harder task is not adding style. The harder task is choosing where to stop, then keeping that restraint as the product grows.
